I have a question for the group:

Has anyone successfully used one of the [several] USB-to-digital devices out
there with a Supermac? Of course, this would have to be "through" a 3rd-party
USB card.

There are a number of gadgets on the market, by Xitel, Onkyo, and others. They
take digital audio from the Mac via USB, and offer input/output in various
formats (such as digital/optical, analog, etc.).

I'm looking to export sound in digital format from my s900 to a minidisc
recorder using an optical "TOSLINK" connecting cable. (I know, some might
suggest, just use an analog cable, but I want to do it the hard way!) This
way, I can tune into Internet radio broadcasts, and "direct" the digital sound
output into a minidisc recorder.

At least one or two of these has optical and analog inputs -- might be useful
for getting sound _into_ the computer from tape, LPs, etc.

Mac support for USB audio got much improved with OS 9.1 (I think OS 9.0.4 is
the earliest that supported sound in/out via USB).

I have read reports (mostly from manufacturers) that to import/export digital
sound through USB, a "primary" USB port is required. By that, I take it to
mean "built-in". Of course, Supermacs lack this, and a 3rd-party card is
required. But -- would it work?

That's why I'm asking for any "real-world" experiences.

Thanks,
- John
