All this recent talk about vinyl to digital, and about VHS to DVD, is complex and quite interesting, but I'm doing audio tapes, and I have a more basic question ...
Once I've converted one side of an audio tape into a digital file (using a program like, say, Audio Scribe), how do I split the resulting medley into individual tracks? What software (freeware?) do I need? Do I really have to pretend I'm a sound engineer and attempt to analyze graphic displays of peaks and valleys, or is there a simpler, more automated way of splitting files into separate tracks? (I would normally perform such tasks in OS 9.1 [not OSX] on my S900/G3/400MHz/1GB). I'm not THAT fussy about sound quality either. Most of these tapes were originally recorded from vinyl, and the quality is not the greatest. I simply wish to preserve my ancient, beloved collection in digital form (scratches, hisses 'n' all), before tape players become obsolete.
