There's also much useful stuff on the low-end side. If you're just working
for a website or your Inkjet printer, take a close look at Adobe's Photoshop
Elements. It's limited to RGB color mode and you'll not be able to work with
seperate channels, but besides this it's almost like Photoshop, for less
than $100.
Also, for a beginner the Wacom Graphire tablet is okay. Not that big, but
better than painting with a mouse. Oh, and you'll get that 3-button mouse,
too.
Did anyone mention GraphicConverter? Maybe the best shareware app ever.

Last tip: Buy Mac magazines. There's much useful stuff on the CDs, and
sometimes you get a nice, unlimited full version of a professional programm.
Some apps I got for free are iView Multimedia, Canvas 6 (wohooo, creating
PDFs for $0,00) and Freeway 2.0.
