If you are attempting to work on such large files with just 256megs
of RAM your doomed to failure. Photoshop wants RAM 3 times the amount
of the file size to be able to keep your last moves in memory while
you work as well as the current info. Now is a great time to buy as
much RAM as you can afford. There are other things you can do to make
your machine deal easily with your Photoshop files such as upgrading
to 9.1, the most current version of PS and a G4 card to take
advantage of the newer versions of PS's use of the Altivec drivers.
That will not only speed up the process but enable you to deal with
those sizes without losing all your work and time.
