David, No, this is not really a new problem nor is it related to Umax clones in particular. Over the years, with various Macs and versions of the OS, there have occasionally been problems with Apple Menu Options. Probably the best way to eliminate the problem is to stop using it. As a substitute, I would suggest the shareware application " BeHierarchic." It has much more functionality than Apple Menu Options.
