A common thread in the search for the answer to this problem. I see
both you and David are using TTP utilities. I wouldn't be surprised if
that is the problem. I found the 2.x version very unreliable for
fixing problems so quit using. I did give the 3.x version a try. It was
improved but still had some issues with it. Several other people who's
opinion I trusted also didn't think it was any where as reliable as it
could be. So I trashed it way over a year or 2 ago. I know some of you
like it and if it works for you with no known issues fine.
I use Disk Warrior first and it is the most reliable utility I've ever
seen. It can't fix everything but what it does it does well. When I
need more then that I use Norton Disk Dr running Disk Warrior first. I
also use Nortons Speed Disk from time to time. OSX doesn't seem to be
as affected by fragmented disks . However oddly enough OS X for some
reason really fragments the drive after an install even on a new clean
drive. I find OSX will run fine for a long time after running Speed
Disk. I find that one of the main problems for me is installing new
programs on a fragmented disk. The programs often don't install or run
well. I tend to try a lot of new programs often likely more then most
people. I also find that using a lot of disk space and then deleting
the files also causes problems after a while. Disk Warrior and speed
Disk takes care of this. I also no longer install any of the utilities
on my main partition. I find running from another disk or the CD works
best and causes the least issues. Drive 10 which I think is made by the
TTP people for OSX .Is crap at this point . I tried it and it's totally
worthless IMHO.
So try fixing things without using TTP and see if that fixes things.
