It can in some models. It's very unlikely to in ours, though an almost flat battery might cause corruption. In our machines, removing the battery altogether is as good a diagnostic technique as replacing it with a new one.


You may wish to remove the battery, unplug the machine and let it sit overnight to be sure that corrupt NVRAM is not the problem.

Also, check that the 3.3V connector for the power supply (six wires, three orange, three black) is seated properly. If the 3.3V is disconnected the machine will power up (using the 5V adn 12V) and the drives will spin, but the later CPUs won't run, hence no chime or boot.
