From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Wed, 03 Sep 2003 08:31:49 +0900 Does anybody know if the ACard PCI IDE cards 6880 (for PC) and 6880M are essentially the same card? Have found an easy to get to source for the former, but the latter is pretty hard to find where I am. Is it just a matter of a firmware flash or is there more involved and the 6880 unusable in the Mac?
Cheers, Pete.
Hi Pete! , Jeff W is likely the best man for answering this but since he hasn't yet at
least. I'll give it a try.
It seems the way to convert them involves buying new firmware chips programing
them with the Mac firmware and then replacing the firmware chip. This involves
soldiering which is beyond my ability. Jeff is the expert on this but for most people
would be more trouble then it's worth. Will S
Sorry, I wasn't paying that much attention. Some weeks I'm just in kind of skim mode for list messages.
Anyway, I've never had my hands on the Acard cards, so I really don't know for certain. Years ago, before I bought my VST card and then some Promise cards, I looked into this and it was my understanding that the Acards were Mac or PC simply based on firmware and that the PC cards were flashable to Mac use without soldering, but I can't guarantee that to be true. I never could find a source for the PC Acards so I had no opportunity to test theories. But Peter is in Japan, I think, so he has access to other sources. On the VST/Promise cards, the Promise cards require moving several resistors and some other fiddling.
The best thing is usually to buy one of each (Mac and PC) card and compare them, but if you only need one card, it's kind of silly, because you could just buy the Mac card and be done with it.
There's a fellow on the PCI Macs list (PeterH) who seems to know alot about them. I'm not sure if he's on SM or not.
Mad Dog can also move the chips around. He's been doing some amazing torture to PowerBooks....
