Sounds like it would be easier to get a software wiz to decompile and remove the code from the updater that checks for the VST firmware.

Surely, but in the years that the card has been available, no one has done so. At least, if they did, they didn't publicize it and the folks I've seen selling converted Promise UltraTek/66 cards were all using the clunkier conversion method I described (or an even clunkier version which does not result in a flashable card). So I suspect that either no one has done so, or if they did, it was for fun and they never made much use of nor released the hack.

Since I've had a chip programmer, I usually program the Flash chip on my chip programmer, as that's easier. But that still requires desoldering the flash chip, so that it can be installed on the programmer. It also required that I have an original VST card at some point so that I could read out the contents of a valid VST card's flash chip.

The VST card is pretty old at this point, and given the issues it has with S900/J700 lower slots and its compatibility issues with several SCSI cards under OS 9.1, I don't really think it's worth hacking PC cards to make VST cards anyway. But, if anyone really wants to try it, there is an outfit that has (had) the Promise cards for $9 each <http://www.edotdirect.com/isapi/EVisions.isa?SF_ProdDescription('pteide66')&EvApp=sf.3014> . I don't know what they charge for shipping.
