The point is that Promise does not sell Mac compatible cards under its own name though. I was keeping an eye on IDE cards sold by SIIG; the product line changed several times and as far as I can figure out, some of them are indeed Acard clones, while others are not; if VST doesn't actually manufacture them then Promise could be a likely suspect. On the Windows side there are still plenty of brands such as Tekram, etc. But if the manufacturers are so very entwined in hardware and software supply and development, making otherwise Mac-compatible products ostensibly incompatible, and at the same time selling a small proportion of them as "Mac version" at silly mark-ups, I do not think I would hesitate too much in trying to make Windows version of any product Mac compatible even though it involves a little jiggery-pokery unless it is impossible (the Matrox conversion is an example of course!)
