Especially if you have the faster 24x Matshita drive that came with your machine. I found this to be a very good solution instead of putzing around with trying to make the internal one bootable or messing with repacing it with another internal one. Many of the external SCSI burners as well as head drives are Apple ROM'd and can be used as a boot device. (I use a LaCie 8x writer/16x reader, a freebie from a friend, which is fast enough for my needs.) Use the burner to....burn CDs, turn around and load it in the internal CD and test it. I use the external burner for booting from DiskWarrior for maintenance. Use the internal drive for ripping/read/play CDs. And finally, boot from the external and use the internal for the OS install discs, which is how I loaded 9.1.
