Somewhere along the upgrade path from the Umax-supplied OS 7.6 disk to OS
8.x, the Umax-supplied 7.6 CD ROM driver extension (FWB CD-ROM Toolkit) becomes
broken, so keeping it around will do nothing for you. So you, too, will have
to pick a new one. Or buy and install a used Apple-rommed CD drive for less
than the cost of a commercial replacement extension. Then you can use the
native OS driver (Apple CD/DVD Driver).
