Serial ATA drives started appearing in Apple machines in the DP G5.
I have no idea what this means in terms of speed compared to the fastest non-raid SCSI setup or a 7200 rpm ATA 100 drive.
The enormous capacity of these drives is a big plus and far less expensive then a hardcore SCSI setup.


Probably could set up a nice ATA drive RAID system for the cost of what I paid for a UW PCI card and a single 9 gb UW drive back in....1999.

Of all the incremental upgrades to my s900, the best bang for the buck was the Tempo ATA 66 card and a 60 gb ATA100 7200 rpm drive.
Quieter and without splitting any hair over it, just as speedy for my needs.
