Diane, The CUDA is a micro-processor that identifies what hardware is connected to the motherboard and stores it in a form of memory that shouldn't get erased between starts unless the battery dies, or you want it to change to reflect changes in your setup. When the computer starts up it needs to know what to expect. The CUDA system is responsible for telling it what it is made of. If something essential on the motherboard changes without that memory being refreshed so it can tell the boot sequence what to expect, then the machine is likely to get very confused and irritable :( The CUDA will take an inventory of what's there and refresh the memory only if the memory is empty, so to get everything up-to-date the CUDA needs to be reset every time something crucial is changed on the motherboard. This would include memory chips, CPU daughter cards, and device controller such as anything attached to the PCI or memory bus. The CUDA's NVRAM is reset by cutting off the current that saves the memory, either by pressing and holding a momentary switch to the rear of the board and behind the last PCI slot, or by unplugging the power supply and removing the battery for a while.
