Thank you for the easy to understand description, I will do this. The present situation with the unit is that it would not run with G3 software, I removed it and the card runs. It sees the card in the system profiler and is running faster. I am thinking though that it is part of what you said about the hardware not be identified and maybe partly a software issue. I am wondering if the original software that would have come with the card might have included a system extension or something that is not letting my machine even open the loaded G3 software. When I clicked on it in the Control Panel I would get a error box come up and tell me "this software can not run on this machine".
Thank you to everyone who helped, it can be very frustrating when you try everything you can think of and still not get the desired results. That is why this Supermac list and its people are so appreciated, definitely by me!
Diane :)
Diane,
The CUDA is a micro-processor that identifies what hardware is connected to the motherboard and stores it in a form of memory that shouldn't get erased between starts unless the battery dies, or you want it to change to reflect changes in your setup. When the computer starts up it needs to know what to expect. The CUDA system is responsible for telling it what it is made of. If something essential on the motherboard changes without that memory being refreshed so it can tell the boot sequence what to expect, then the machine is likely to get very confused and irritable :(
The CUDA will take an inventory of what's there and refresh the memory only if the memory is empty, so to get everything up-to-date the CUDA needs to be reset every time something crucial is changed on the motherboard. This would include memory chips, CPU daughter cards, and device controller such as anything attached to the PCI or memory bus. The CUDA's NVRAM is reset by cutting off the current that saves the memory, either by pressing and holding a momentary switch to the rear of the board and behind the last PCI slot, or by unplugging the power supply and removing the battery for a while.
