Before I either begin the search for a new board or just gut it and scrap it, can
anybody suggest anything I haven't tried yet? I'm really starting to regret
swapping my Beige G3 for this POS, but I really wanted a dual-processor
machine........
There's resetting the PRAM and then there's resetting the PRAM...
One thing to try is to limber up your fingers. Press the power on button. Then ***BEFORE the start-up chime has finished sounding*** press the command-option-P-R key combination.
Zapping the PRAM early like that seems to reset some lower level things that zapping the PRAM later does not affect.
The symptoms you are experiencing can be caused by a bad motherboard, but they can also be caused by corrupt or poorly programmed NVRAM-rc contents and it takes an early PRAM zap to clear them.
One primary cause of this problem can be the PowerLogix E-100 updater extension. I don't remember the circumstances that cause this problem with that extension, but the early PRAM zap is the solution. At least that gets the machine past the black screen. The problem is that after two boots (if that extension is the cause) the problem comes back because the NVRAM has been programmed back to the problem contents.
Also, check to be sure that the 3.3 volt connector from the power supply is securely connected.
