fwiw, back in the day i wanted a drive that was faster than the UW-SCSI that came with my S900, so i decided to purchase an LVD SCSI controller from adaptec. you know, the ultra wide and fast SCSI interface that could handle up to 160MB/sec? well, when buying the drive to go with it, i discovered that the drive itself is usually the limiting factor.

you need to check the specs of the drive, specifically, the "sustained internal data transfer rate." the best SCSI drive i could find back then had a sustained internal data transfer rate of about 20MB/sec. i wouldn't be suprised if that is still about the best you can get. nor would i be suprised if most IDE drives supplied by computer makers were slower (a lot slower).

the amount of buffer/cache on the drive is also important. it should be 8MB or above. sadly, most OEM drives come with the smallest on-board buffer that that particular mfgr makes.

you might be a lot better off with a six-pack of SCSI drives in a RAID case. with the 29160 controller, you can actually approach the 160MB/sec of the interface. that should cut your time drastically.
