What I did was 'remove grippys' (theme component/userchrome.css)

What did you add to userChrome.css?

/* Kill the grip bars on every single toolbar */

toolbargrippy {
display: none;
 }

Removing the 'grip bars' effectively locks your toolbars into place.

*after* I clicked to minimize the bar.

How did you minimize the bar? I do not see the possibility on Modern.

On the far left of each toolbar is a funky-looking square with a triangle in it. You can manually hide toolbars by toggling that on or off.

(at least on my SM 2.17.1 with Modern theme I still see them)

Now, the tab bar *never* shows in Mail/News.

That would be nice. Currently i have to live with '[x] Hide the tab bar
when only one tab is open'. Annoying for the browser.

That is exactly what I was going through until I did this tweak.

Nevertheless, you have helped finding a bug on my Nightly.

Awesome! :)

And *that's* what I like about newsgroups and forums! Comments made can open doors for other people...

I'm no programmer or web designer... but I learn a *lot* from stuff like this.

Collaborate!  :D
