A quick search of the MS KnowledgeBase tech support wizard yielded a
couple of hits,
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q262/9/98.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0

both have this ominous phrase:
This behavior can occur if you have faulty computer hardware or a
damaged driver or program, or if your
    Windows core files are damaged.

I don't know enough about Windows to be able to speculate more. I
note that both the tech support articles I found mentioned a
potential problem with rundll or rundll32. The fault seems to be
missing drivers, so it's possible you have a corrupt file. You should
get your tech guru to look into this further.

Possible, and it might help you troubleshoot what is apparently a
system problem. Note that the Trial version of FileMaker doesn't play
well with ebase. It's got something to do with the limited
capabilities of the trial version. You won't be able to get to layout
mode, for example.

I seriously doubt it. Version 2 will ship with a FileMaker5.5 runtime
very similar to the one you are attempting to use.
