Both kids software, old AOL and various audio programs all sound like
probable culprits for having installed bad versions of critical pieces. 4
years without a reinstall of windows is way above average. You may be able
to get away with just a reinstall of windows on top of what is there. That
should not damage the running of any of the currently installed programs. I
would try that first. It depends on what kind of a computer you have and if
you have a windows install CD. Some brands, Compaq and IBM at least in my
experience, only provide a CD that puts the system back to factory ship
state, i.e. wipes out everything you have. Don't go there!

For some brands there is a copy of the install CD on your hard disk - no
standard place, just look around, might be called win98 or win98cd as part
of its path name. Either a new install CD or an update install CD will work.
In all three of these cases find the setup.exe and read all the dialog
questions carefully as some options will lose everything on you disk. A
backup of anything important is advised.
