The only way I can replicate this behavior is to have the network 
preferences set so FileMaker is using TCP/IP and the OS is set to use 
PPP for establishing a TCP/IP connection. You have set the network 
preferences to none on the new copy of FileMaker, so I've got to 
wonder if you have two copies of FileMaker floating around, and when 
you launch ebase (using an alias?) it's using a copy of FileMaker 
with an active network protocol.

Try launching your new copy of FileMaker, verify that it has the 
network protocol set to none, and using the File Menu to open ebase.
