Well, here are some of the common and favorate answers I collected
from 2 ISPs in a period of 2 years:
- "Try to type the word "exit" and press enter."
- "This is impossible, we do not allow any other system then Windows
to connect to our service."
- "What is DOS?"
- "We do not support this system."
- "DOS cannot connect to the internet, sir."
- "DOS? why do you insist on using a system which allow you to
surf only with text browsers?"
- "We do not support Macintoshs, sir."
- "There is a macintosh dialer availble for download in our web-page."
And one last case that I remember clearly:
Once when I finally found out away to connect to IBM in Israel using
Arachne. I called to IBM support to tell them how to do it, to help
any other DOS users who might request for help. Instead the guy
was suprised that DOS can even use the modem. He then told me that
they are not intrested in that information, as they do not encourage
the use of obselete computers/programs on the internet. I then noted
that just about -everything- can connect to the internet given the
proper tools, even an Atari ST got a stack. That was when he hanged-up.
BTW, the tech support in my current ISP allready knows me as the
"guy who uses DOS".. In the end I was able to convice them to put
a URL to a dos-internet help page on their site, and direct DOS
users who call them to there, so etleast these users will get SOME
support.
