Hmm, I recall that I got win95 some months before switching to cable modem
and had the system configured so I never had to do the connection. I
opened up my browser or mailer and it activated, dialled, passworded and
disconnected on close, all by itself. Don't remember exactly what I did,
but it related to "save password" on the checkbox in internet properties,
and also to settings in the browser and mailer for automatically
connecting. I had the mailer in startup and when the computer booted it
opened Eudora, dialled in, downloaded the mail, hungup the connection, and
re-did this every twenty minutes throughout the day, with no input from me,
and sent queued messages when it checked for new ones.
Now that I have the cable modem, I don't have to install or configure
anything, except to remove the microsoft networking when it's all done so
it doesn't annoy me with a network password when I boot up.
The installation program finds the internet by itself.
