AFAIK, TrueType fonts are not downloaded to the printer but rather
printed while the printer is in "graphics mode".
I've tried downloaded fonts with my Canon BJ-10-sx, WordPerfect 5.0 and
a 286 and it worked OK. As soon as the font file info is downloaded to
the printer's RAM, you can then use all the commands you normally use
for the printer's ROM-fonts, like italics, bold, subscript etc. The
transfer of the text from the computer to the printer then goes as fast
as if you were using the built-in fonts.
You don't, however, get the same freedom as with Windows and TrueType-
fonts which you can scale to whatever size you want, but these
calculations take some time, especially on an old and slow computer,
before the text can be sent to the printer as graphics.
WordPerfect is supplied with an extensive printer definition programme,
where you can change about every parameter necessary, and some more. It
is possible, although it took me quite a bit of time, to add any
downloadable fonts to WP's regular font-menu and to automate the
necessary command-strings, so you could use these fonts just as you are
using the built-in ones.
