WR>HK>I downloaded a Times Roman font to my printer, and
WR>HK>AFAIK it's a laserjet font, and I've been using it for
WR>HK>years!
WR>Are you sure that the printer is using your downloaded font and
WR>not its built-in version?
WR>After all, Times-Roman is also built into your Deskjet 870, and
WR>as the PCL language specifies that unknown PCL commands are to be
WR>ignored without any error message, the difference is not easy to
WR>tell (unless the 2 fonts have very different character widths).
WR>I once had a Deskjet 870 for a 1-day-test (I had to test some
WR>compatibility issues regarding our software). I did not check out
WR>specifically whether HP enhanced its abilities regarding download
WR>fonts. I do know, however, that the 870 did _not_ support full
WR>page cursor positioning which is a vital requirement for PCL
WR>levels 4 (Laserjet 2) or 5 (Laserjet 3).
WR>Therefore I assume that despite having scaleable fonts built into
WR>its firmware, the Deskjet 870 still uses the old (= Deskjet 500)
WR>font format optimized for printers without full page memory.
WR>On the other hand, the upper end of the Deskjets (1200 and above)
WR>have totally different EPROMs and support the full HP Laserjet 4
WR>abilities (including scalable PCL 5e fonts).
You raise an excellent question.
One of the tests I've done is to use my usual PCL commands
*without* first downloading my font, which in the download
program I call no. 68. That is, I turned the printer on, and
instead of using the "download" program, I simply entered the
command "use font no. X". However, when I specified the font
number, instead of saying "use no. 68", which is what I usually
do, I said "use no. 61". And what happened was that I got my TR
font--tho I don't know if it was the built-in Times-Roman font,
or the one I downloaded!
The 4 built-in fonts each have their own number--and the TR font
is something like no. 4101.
It's also interesting to note that the download program is able
to detect when an attached printer is not ready to accept the
download command, because it gives me an error message if the
printer is not online! So it appears that in fact I'm
downloading properly, but somehow, just not specifying the font
correctly.
Do you have any more suggestions for things to try?
