Are you sure that the printer is using your downloaded font and
not its built-in version?
After all, Times-Roman is also built into your Deskjet 870, and
as the PCL language specifies that unknown PCL commands are to be
ignored without any error message, the difference is not easy to
tell (unless the 2 fonts have very different character widths).
I once had a Deskjet 870 for a 1-day-test (I had to test some
compatibility issues regarding our software). I did not check out
specifically whether HP enhanced its abilities regarding download
fonts. I do know, however, that the 870 did _not_ support full
page cursor positioning which is a vital requirement for PCL
levels 4 (Laserjet 2) or 5 (Laserjet 3).
Therefore I assume that despite having scaleable fonts built into
its firmware, the Deskjet 870 still uses the old (= Deskjet 500)
font format optimized for printers without full page memory.
On the other hand, the upper end of the Deskjets (1200 and above)
have totally different EPROMs and support the full HP Laserjet 4
abilities (including scalable PCL 5e fonts).
