Hi, I believe that you may be right.  When EGA monitors were the current
technology, they were considerably more expensive than CGA monitors.  When
VGA came out very soon afterward, it was not much, if any, more expensive
than EGA for considerably better, sharper, and more colorful video.  The
switch from CGA through EGA to VGA in the monitor world is analogous to that
from 2400 BPS through 9600 BPS to 14.4KBPS in the modem world.  You can
still find scads of 2400 Baud modems and gazillions of 14.4 modems, but 9600
BPS modems are surprisingly rare.  The 9600 modems were considerably more
expensive than the same companies' 2400 models, but the 14.4 modems were not
much if any more expensive than the 9600 BPS models.
