I think the reason is that VGA emerged soon after EGA appeared and the market
simply shifted to this format before EGA had established itself over CGA. I
think this is similar to what happened with the ESDI HD interface. ESDI
incorporated some of the features of IDE interface, but the IDE interface
emerged before ESDI had supplanted the MFM/RLL interface that was dominant at
the time. I suspect that it is a little more complicated than this, but this
is the basic scenario.
