Thankyou for demonstrating that I am not exaggerating! The scenario of a
baseball bat to the computer was not made up, it happened. A friend of
mine got an old XT with some games and was struggling to figure it
out. This was a couple years ago and I didn't know much about it yet. Her
current grocery provider was unhappy with the roles/rules of the game and
decided that violent intimidation was in order on a regular schedule. One
night it was the computer. THat sort of violence is extremely common in my
neighborhood too, and the women who are victims of it are one of my target
groups, sort of. They are in the disenfranchised society to whom I want to
give access. It's not to bring people into computer literacy, nor improve
their employability, it's to give them a forum for communication which they
can use to heal themselves. From that will flow all the rest. Imagine if
she can email about her situation and get support and advice without the
controller knowing what's going on because he's not computer literate or
patient enough to aquire the skill! Only thing is, how to protect the
computer? Don't know, other than not putting it in such a home. (No,
mothers in abusive homes can't get to a cybercafe, the mate wouldn't let them.)
