Hey all,

I was surprised today when my sister's friend gave me a computer,
including monitor and printer. In fact everything a 'normal' computer
would have except a mouse. It is an Osborne Computer (an Australian
company that went bankrupt around '95 then Gateway bought them out).
PS/2 also. [BTW no CD-ROM, sound, modem, etc]

Turning it on made a high-pitched buzzing noise, which I first
thought was the power supply fan. But this didn't affect the computer
in any noticable way. This computer is a 486DX with 16MB RAM, and a
545MB Harddrive! [Haven't found the MHz yet; it seems 33] It worked
good, except it couldn't autodetect the harddrive - it works when the
data is entered. But now I can't find the way to get into the CMOS -
most buttons I tried were either ignored or it said "key stuck error"
- [F1,F2,F4,F9,F10,Del,Spacebar]. FWIW Its a Phoenix BIOS.

I even managed to run Arachne in 640x480 in 65k colours. It wouldn't
work in 256 [probably refresh on the monitor]. And the setup program
crashed when tried to do standard VGA 16 colours. Arachne 1.5.S.R.C
in 65k colours is pretty, especially with the fading greys on the
buttons.

MS-DOS 6.22 and MS-Win 3.11 included. I plan to partition the hdd and
dual boot W95 and Linux. :) [At last a real distro of linux on my own
computer!] [That W95 might become DR-DOS 7/W3.11 if W95 gets too
annoying] -> I plan to run my LAN with this as the gateway. Now I
need to get hold of another NIC to run 3 computers at once....

..Pretty good for NOTHING.

Now for the real point of this post:

I'm sure the noise is from the harddrive. When pressed down the noise
changes pitch. It also gets warm, but AFAICT not excessive. So, does
anybody know how I can stop this noise? And could it damage it even
more? The noise is annoying. There are no bad sectors, according to
scandisk.

I think the previous owners might have tried to get it fixed and got
it reformmated - not muched used: only two shareware games, windows
and MSWorks.

--Editing later:
I've put zipslack on the harddrive of this computer [geez those
directories run deep!] and got on the internet for 4 hours. Towards
the end of this, the hdd was making all kind of strange noises. So
it might be on its last legs. :(
