BH>I was surprised today when my sister's friend gave me a computer,
BH>including monitor and printer. In fact everything a 'normal' computer
BH>would have except a mouse. It is an Osborne Computer (an Australian
BH>company that went bankrupt around '95 then Gateway bought them out).
BH>PS/2 also. [BTW no CD-ROM, sound, modem, etc]

Osborne (if I recall correctly, but my memory is lousy) used to make one
of the better-known non-PC-compatible machines.

BH>Turning it on made a high-pitched buzzing noise, which I first
BH>thought was the power supply fan. But this didn't affect the computer

Probably is.

BH>Now for the real point of this post:

BH>I'm sure the noise is from the harddrive. When pressed down the noise
BH>changes pitch. It also gets warm, but AFAICT not excessive. So, does

When you press down on -what-? The case? Directly on the HD?

BH>anybody know how I can stop this noise? And could it damage it even
BH>more? The noise is annoying. There are no bad sectors, according to
BH>scandisk.

Again, probably not the harddrive, although it -could- be. Used to have
a harddrive made funny noises like that. Then it quit completely. And
since it was Truly Aged, the drive was of a Truly Aged type they don't
even make anymore, and the rest of the computer was worth maybe a buck.

FWIW, Harddrives are machines with moving parts. Little electric
stepper motors, with bearings & such. The bearings wear out, and the
drives make Funny Noises. At which time, it's time to get a new drive.
And a new computer to put it in.
