A real long shot, but could a cable be interfering with the CPU fan?
Depending on how it's laid out, the cable might run under the drive and thus
explain the change in pitch when you push on the drive.

It could be the drive (easy way to know for sure is yank it out and set it
on top) in which case I'd fear for its future.

So far as the setup, many diagnostic programs allow you to get into CMOS for
the common functions.

Good luck! If worse comes to worse, one of the RAM/floppy disk based Linux
distros could be used to keep it functional until you round up another hard
disk.
