Sorry, I was referring to something that can happen with Ethernet as a sort
of example of what might happen (in different circumstances - having a
computer at each end of a thinnet cable at different mains phases). If you
put incompatible cards and hubs together, you might get nothing, or you
might let the magic smoke out. It's hard to say really, but all the same I
wouldn't recommend just plugging anything into an existing system.
