I don't have an answer for the larger question,
but regarding your comments on the browser,
keep an eye on the Opera for Linux page:
http://www.operasoft.com/linux/index.html
for developments of this browser. The Windows
version is the most resource-efficient browser
in its class. I'm sure the Linux version will
be a real contender.
