Hello,
I've got a question concerning Linux on my PC. Let me first say what my
system is: Pentium 120Mhz 48Mb RAM, running Linux Redhat 6.0
I'm studying computer science, and so it's heavily used for programming
stuff, quite a lot of it using Java. I also use Netscape all the time
(simply because I don't know any other decent browser less hungry in terms
of system resources...). And of course some text editing and formatting...
and a few games...
Anyway.. sometimes my system really gets in trouble handling all these
things, and so I was wondering if using Mandrake would make my system
faster. That's because Mandrake uses Pentium-optimized code, so since I've
got a Pentium, why don't use it as a Pentium... but I wonder what would be
the best...
- I now got a running system, so I could build myself a system, compile all
programs with pentium optimization, and install only the things i really
need
- or I could install Mandrake
I guess the first option would be the best, but then, how do I start ?
with the basic set of an existing distribution like Slackware or so ?
And else.. does anyone have any experience with Mandrake ? In fact one of
the things I hate about Mandrake(Redhat) is their use of RPMs... yes it's
easy.. but I always feel like I don't have any control over it... I already
tried to relocate an RPM while installing it, because I wanted that proggie
in my /usr/local directory, but no it couldn't be relocated...
Does anyone have any experience with Mandrake ?
Or recommendations to speed things up ?
Thnx,
Piwi
