There's a fellow at the theatre where I work. he does 3 jobs on a pittance
salary because the theatre can barely afford to keep running and needs
dedicated staff. He's often working late at night, then early in the
morning again. I know for a fact he puts in a good many hours updating his
knowledge of the regulations and manuals required by his job also.
He HATES computers. Will rant on about it at the merest mention of
them. The theatre stuck one in his office last year. He's played the odd
cd on it, taken a stab at Autocad, book in hand, but mostly, it just
gathers dust. he wants nothing to do with it. The theatre has added email
to their operations. He's getting email. You better believe he's expected
to read it and reply to it too! Nobody's going to print it off and run it
over to him so he can continue to hate the computer he never wanted. Is he
an idiot? does he deserve to live? No, and yes, respectively. He's a
BUSY man. The computer is supposed to reduce his workload, not add to
it! He will be lucky if he can figure out how to open and read and reply,
knowing anything more won't happen overnight. If he'd gotten the love bug
he'd never have had a clue that there was anything wrong with clicking on
it. hell, he only vaguely realizes there's malicious people out
there! He's not stupid, he's uneducated and reluctant.
I don't think he, or the theatre, would have deserved that.
The reason that they went with winNT and MSoffice is simply that it is the
only software for which they can find any tech support. Heck, there aren't
even any Linux classes in this place. I know, I've looked. Oh, and they
upgraded from DOS just last year. couldn't get support and didn't have the
applications they needed. This is it, folks, the state of the art.

Inertia. It's not just an object at rest tends to stay at rest; it's
also an object in motion tends to stay in motion.
