Actually, you can, open your windows explorer and navigate to
"c:\windows\start menu\ and then to whatever folder you want. have the
window not maximized, grab the shortcut and drop it into the folder of your
choice. Another way there is to right click on start button, choose
properties (keyboard shortcut "r") and then up to the second tab on the
top, "start menu programs" and click on the "advanced" button to open the
folder described above.
They hide all the good stuff because it's the stuff that you can most
easily use to wreck things. I've seen some insanely stupid things done in
the name of fooling around by people who don't know enough about computers
to fool that deeply. Bury it and you make it slightly more fool proof.
The people I know who just use their computers and let the task scheduler
take care of maintenance, rarely trying out new applications or fooling
with things usually have solid, stable systems for years at a time. In
those cases if they witness the BSOD it's because they've run into
something that overloads the machine, like those websites that have endless
popups, or they've got too many things going at once.
