I installed 98lite, if that's what you are taking about.  www.98lite.com
or something similar.  I am seriously thinking of buying the
"professional" version.

No, not like this.  My ISP doesn't ping me all the time.  The lights
aren't active now, for instance.  Actually I am looking at the little
icon in the applet tray, not my modem, but they seem to coincide.
