There's a program I used a while ago (scanning program for Unices IIRC) that
asked for a key string during installation. The string was generated by
sticking your machine's MAC address, hostname (and possible OS and IP
address) and a few other bits into a CGI form and hitting Submit. This
meant that if your NIC blew up or you renamed your machine, you needed a new
key. Of course, my NIC blew up while I was copying the tarball up to the
machine. C'est la vie. (I got my own back by renaming the machine and not
adding a CNAME to DNS. Ha!)
