Could that be one of those deliberately-tampered install
disks? <g>  IIRC they were physically "punched" at specific
track/sector with caloric laser or micro needle.  Copier
programs always compensate for this small error, and put an
equivalent of null byte on the target disk -- telling the
installer that it is indeed a "pirated" copy ;-)
