I use a comercial protected program that is initilated as:

1) You load the program from disks.
2) You call by phone to the program owner.
3) They tell you to go to a point in the program where a large
alphanumeric word is generated.
4) You tell them word.
5) You wait an instant. The owner inputs your word in his computer, a
new word is generated.
6) That new word is send to you.
7) You input that word into your computer.
8) The program works.

If you change your MOTHERBOARD, you can still continue to use the same
program in the new machine.

But if you copy, or xcopy it to another HARDDISK, you have to call
them again, and they decide if they give you another installating
word. I think you'll have to give them enough asurense that the other
copy is not working.

Conclusion: in this case they don't use any number from the
motherboard or the microprocesor.

I think the number that my machine generates, is goten from the
internal clock and a formula.
