No, an XT keyboard will not work with an AT controller or AT->PS/2 adapter.
There are a few differences in the keyboard interface. One easy one to spot
is that an AT keeps the state of the modifier keys in a byte in memory, and
the keyboard's three state LEDs reflect that byte - so a program can change
the lights or the modifier states at will. On an XT, the keyboard keeps
this information internally, and so the PC has no control over the lights or
state. This leads to the ability to use the Scroll Lock key to check how
badly an AT has crashed - if the light flashes when you press it, the
machine is at least responding to the keyboard controller interrupt.
My old Elonex had a keyboard with an XT/AT switch on the back. If it was
set to XT then the machine would beep incessantly after power on or the
first keypress.
