hi all,

here is the latest edition. whe n last we left karen and her hard drive, i
was going to change the h. s. c. numbers to the right ones and see if it
would work. as i noted both seagate and ami insist that the bios is fine in
terms of seeing my drive which is supposed to be 2.012g.
well .... it looked fine at first.
changed numbers in bios, ran fdisc, partisitioned and formated four small
drives, installed dos,
reached the message," to restart your computer with ms dos press continue"
did this and.....
at first got a message saying that the file fatdsk.exe was not mounted
then a invalid type reading drive c,
then a c drive failure.

yes i ran fdisc, yes it formated all four drives even asking each time if we
wanted this done
yes it did install dos.
yes i am having a neverous breakdown over this,
and yes i am back to running it at 504mg.

i have been advised by seagate *not* to try their diskmanagement software.
they went through the whole thing with me a second time, minus some of the
messages, and have no clue.
i have yet another reader coming on monday and am going to try a utility
sent to me by someone who used it to set up their seagate hd on a 486
before.
while i could try the disc management overlay software, even its maker says
no. still i wanted to ask for opinions on this. only opinions not
instructions.
other than this i suppose i have two other alternatives.
1, find someone with windows, and extra space in their computer, set up the
thing for windows, meaning either use the heads sectors and cylenders
numbers for windows, but partision the drive into the smaller pieces, or use
the advance settings which worked before.
2. my second option is to find another harddrive. to that end, if anyone
has any idea where specifically i can find a hard drive larger than 500 mg
but smaller than say 4g, please tell me! specifically meaning a real place.
i have been looking for computer shows in the nyc area and have not seen
any.
i suppose a varriation on this would be to find a small drive and send this
one back to seagate or somewhere else. still i would need another drive
though.
on top of all this, i am starting to get odd modem errors.
you know, when the modem connects at 100 and fills the screen with junk? in
my case it fills the speaker with u u u u u u u u u's
any guesses on that one too?
thanks for all your support,
karen
