Nope, mc ain't essential. Myself, I never use it.
It's not even on my system. I suppose if you use
Norton Commander in DOS, then you'll probably want
to use Midnight Commander in Linux. But the rest
of us are quite happy running Linux without mc.

(4) use a good search engine to look for <name>
