My apologies to anyone who tried to download
install-to-HD today. It was unavailable for
several hours while I worked on some improvements.
The new version has just gone up and (hopefully)
it will be the final version.
Actually, there's nothing really wrong with the old
version -- as long as you stick to the CLI. But,
several problems appear if you try to install X.
So, I decided to fix them in install-to-HD before
too many people had downloaded it.
If you've already downloaded the old version,
there's no need to get the new version unless
you intend to install X at some stage. The
best way to determine which version you have
is to execute pkg. If pkg is missing, you have
the old version.
As a result of the improvements in install-to-HD,
users can now install X using standard packages from
Slackware 3.5. Most of the work is done by pkg and
the only difficult job for the user is finding answers
for those thorny questions in xf86config.
Icewm is working fine on BasicLinux and I'll be
providing it in pkg format for easy installation.
I haven't tried Netscape yet, but I don't anticipate
any problems. The standard 3.04 package is compatible
with Slackware 3.5 and (last time I looked) was still
freely available from the Netscape site.
Cheers,
Steven
