vmlinuz is 216,151 bytes. I believe that this is a specially compiled kernel for low memory and elf support. This one has serial and SLIP, but no PPP and is not Y2K (current dates are 1902). Later versions of Smalllinux use a 2. kernel with PPP and are Y2K, but require more than 2 meg ram. Linux-lite also uses a 1.0.9 kernel, but it is even more limited. I think that both of these projects date from 1998. Question - Does this version of BasicLinux use a standard Slackware kernel? I was able to install Debian 2.1 on the same PC using the "lowmem" boot disk, but Debian 3.0 (current) does not include such a disk and I was unable to install it on this machine. The docs say that 12 meg ram is required. > > Minor point - I don't think I was able to reboot from Linux > > with Ctrl-Alt-Del > > That's interesting. I always use "reboot" to reboot anyways. > Yes, Slackware 8.1 has just about anything you need (and, if not, > it's got a routine for handling .rpm packages). I've just downloaded kernel-modules (a biggie) and modutils. I would like to get networking set up and some other things. Howard E.
