Hmm...  Good point.  My survServer will manage it (usually run the console at
800x600 to get something like 136 columns), but I replaced the graphics card
in there a while after upgrading it to a P133 (which was in itself an enforced
upgrade, as the original mobo developed a crack).  The original card didn't
even do VESA 1 if memory serves.

In the course of my ongoing tinkering with Knoppix on the laptop, I remembered
that VMware doesn't properly emulate VESA 2 either, so Knoppix has to fire up
the XFree86 server.  Still testing the limits on that; doesn't help that the
ISO I'm using is a fair few months old and a BETA version with higher memory
requirements than the current release.  Going to have to annoy my housemates
and hog the ADSL link for a while I guess.
