Firebug is a great, great tool for SVG development, particularly if you're
constructing interactive documents, but I've only been able to make it work
when the SVG is wrapped in an XHTML context. This means creating a compound
document, like the one here:

http://www.croczilla.com/svg/samples/dom1/dom1.xml

Just make sure that everything is properly namespaced when you add new DOM
nodes, and don't assume that your SVG root is equivalent to
document.documentElement, and everything should be fine.
