I know most hotels don't assign guests to specific rooms as a matter of course until patrons check in unless the matter is specifically discussed at the time a reservation is made.
This is because the laws allow prior guests to stay in their rooms if they pay their bills, and because a maintenance item might crop up in a room between the time of reservation and the time of arrival. AJ, did you request a specific room number or room location when you made your original reservation? I'm not defending a mistake, I'm trying to understand what might have caused it and to alert others who have an expectation of a specific room how the process works.
