All of them are easier than booting into OS 9

Really? I've tried all the alternate methods mentioned, including FTP,
modems and so on, but I still find that it takes "mere seconds" to boot into
OS 9.

But the fact remains that I wish there was a "direct" means of accessing via
Appletalk under Tiger (not with FTP or other indirect approaches). But
alas, this cannot be done.

maybe it could be done with the linux netatalk package. I'm unaware if anyone has tried to compile it on OSX. Netatalk can only connect with the old appletalk and ethertalk networks. appletalk over ip is not supported. in theory one should add another ethernet card to a OSX machine and use that for netatalk whilse the onboard card uses the appletalk over ip protocol. you then have to give the netatalk server another name to distinguish between the new and old form of appletalk.

It would be an interesting experiment
